What Is the USDA Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP)?

The Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) is USDA NRCS’s premier incentive program for agricultural producers who want to be rewarded for conservation leadership. Unlike EQIP (which pays per practice) or RIM (which pays for a permanent easement), CSP pays you an annual per-acre payment over a 5-year contract for maintaining and expanding conservation activities across your entire operation.

In Minnesota and Wisconsin, CSP is particularly valuable for agricultural landowners who already maintain riparian buffers, manage woodlots, or have worked with NRCS previously. The program builds on existing conservation and rewards landowners for going further — including forestry management, invasive species control, and integrated crop/forest systems.

💡 Why CSP matters for woodland and edge-of-field land: CSP includes specific payment enhancements for forested buffers, edge-of-field practices, and woodland conservation activities. If your agricultural operation includes forested land, invasive species to manage, or riparian corridors needing improvement, those practices can significantly increase your CSP payment rate — and Aspen Land Management’s work directly supports several CSP enhancement categories.

2026 CSP Payment Structure

  • Base payment: $8–$12 per acre/year for existing conservation activities
  • Enhancement payment: Additional $4–$8/acre/year for new or improved conservation activities
  • Supplemental payment: Additional incentives for soil health, water quality, wildlife habitat bundles
  • Stewardship payment total: Up to $18/acre/year on highly qualified operations
  • Maximum payment cap: $200,000 over 5-year contract period per entity
  • Woodland bonus: Additional per-acre payment for including woodlands and forest management in the CSP plan

How Aspen Land Management Supports Your CSP Plan

Several CSP enhancement activities directly involve the type of work Aspen Land Management specializes in:

  • Woodland management enhancements: Invasive species control, timber stand improvement, and tree canopy management are CSP-eligible enhancement activities that increase your annual payment.
  • Riparian forest buffer establishment: Preparing riparian edges through forestry mulching and invasive removal supports buffer establishment — a high-value CSP practice bundle.
  • Edge-of-field management: Clearing invasive species from field edges and woodlot boundaries is a documented CSP enhancement activity in many state ranking systems.
  • Access road improvements: For operations that need improved access to manage woodland resources — a CSP-eligible practice.

Contact NRCS

Visit your county NRCS office. Request a CSP information session and ranking worksheet to see if your operation qualifies.

2

Conservation Inventory

NRCS conducts a conservation inventory of your operation to identify existing activities and opportunities for enhancement.

3

CSP Application Submitted

Applications are accepted year-round and ranked periodically. Higher scores (more conservation) get priority funding.

4

Contract & Implementation

If funded, you receive a 5-year contract. Complete approved enhancement activities (including forestry work with Aspen LM) within specified timelines.

5

Annual Payments

Receive annual payments as you implement and maintain approved conservation activities. Payments arrive typically each fall.

⚠️ Disclosure: Aspen Land Management does not guarantee CSP enrollment or payment amounts. CSP is competitive and determined by NRCS ranking. Our role is to perform the specific conservation practices your CSP contract requires, documented to NRCS standards for payment authorization.
