Subsoil Mulching: Coming Spring 2027
Aspen Land Management LLC is developing a new subsoil mulching service, expected to be available beginning Spring 2027. This expanded capability builds on Aspen’s existing forestry mulching and land clearing operations and is designed to address root systems, compacted subsoil layers, and below-grade vegetation infrastructure that standard surface mulching does not fully address.
What Is Subsoil Mulching?
Standard forestry mulching processes above-ground vegetation: stems, branches, shrubs, saplings, and smaller trees. Subsoil mulching extends this capability below the surface, targeting root masses, buried stumps, compacted hardpan, and organic debris embedded in the upper soil profile.
For properties dealing with persistent invasive species such as buckthorn, the root system and seed bank below ground are often the reason regrowth occurs after surface clearing. Subsoil mulching is engineered to reduce the below-grade infrastructure that enables that regrowth, increasing the long-term effectiveness of the clearing work.
