Somerset Buckthorn Reclamation
A phased forestry-mulching project on private acreage affected by dense common buckthorn and invasive woody brush.
The challenge
A private property near Somerset, Wisconsin contained areas of dense common buckthorn and invasive woody brush that restricted access and increased long-term vegetation-management needs.
This phase focused on a newly defined treatment area, separate from earlier work on the property.
The scope
Aspen and the property owner identified the treatment boundaries, equipment access, vegetation to retain, utilities, sensitive or unsafe areas, and areas excluded from mechanical treatment.
The phase was planned as a distinct treatment area so that completed work could be documented separately from untreated portions of the property.
Aspen’s approach
Aspen used tracked forestry-mulching equipment to mechanically reduce accessible buckthorn and invasive woody vegetation inside the approved treatment area. Work remained within the defined project limits, and desirable retained vegetation and excluded areas were avoided.
Processed woody material remained on site as mulch. No debris hauling or burning was included in this phase.
The result
The completed treatment phase reduced dense standing woody vegetation, improved access through the treated area, and created a clearer starting point for continued vegetation management.
Looking ahead
The property owner is evaluating longer-term forest-management planning and potential future conservation-program opportunities. No grant approval, reimbursement, or agency endorsement is implied.
